Shrub Pruning and Hedge Trimming

We have skilled workers on staff who are experts in Pruning.

Our Pruning Policy
We believe in proper pruning techniques. Most plants and shrubs need to be carefully pruned by hand, with hand pruners. Many landscape crews at other companies use their hedge trimmer for all of their pruning. They use it as their  main pruning tool. This is a bad practice that damages your plants as well as resulting in plants and trees having improper form. Our crews use their hand pruners as their main pruning tool. You will not find our crews taking a hedge trimmer to all of your shrubs and plants. For most plants, hand pruning will be applied, with the goal being to keep the plant or shrub in it’s natural form. We will use the hedge trimmers only where you have existing shrubs that have already been
trained into a hedge form. All other proper pruning practices will be applied as well.

Proper Timing
Some plants should only be pruned certain times of the year. Spring blooming plants like Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and Camellias should not be pruned late in the season, unless absolutely necessary. Doing so will jeopardize the following year’s bloom. Similarly, we wouldn’t normally prune a summer blooming dogwood in the spring, right before it blooms. Perennials will be trimmed back in the fall, as they die back, which is a proper practice for these plants. We are careful to do all of our
pruning at the proper time of year with the well-being of your plants always foremost in our minds.

Pruning Limitations
We can usually handle most of your pruning needs. However, we do know our limitations. There are certain times when we will not be able to handle certain pruning needs. For instance, we don’t do any big tree pruning. We also don’t do pruning that is dangerous by nature (e.g. pruning by power lines or pruning that would possibly damage a house). If we run into a scenario where we can’t handle a certain pruning situation, we will refer you to a certified arborist that we know who specializes in that kind of pruning.

Lawn Aeration

Core Aeration is when we use a big rolling power tool to create perforations, or holes, in the lawn. The cores, or plugs, are redeposited onto the top of the lawn and work as a beneficial top dressing. This is the preferred method for many landscapers because there is less risk for damage to the lawn and the lawn can recover faster than it does with dethatching.

Even if your variety of grass isn’t prone to thatch buildup, there is always a concern with soil compaction. Our clay soils become highly compacted over time. Compacted soil makes it hard for nutrients and water to penetrate down to the roots of the turfgrass. This is the other main benefit of Core Aeration.

The best time to aerate lawns is in the spring time. It can be done in the summer but the lawn must have ample irrigation in order to recover properly. Fall is the second best choice to aerate.

Dethatching

After a while, certain varieties of grass tend to build up thatch faster than they can decompose it. This layer of thatch, or dead grass, creates a layer under the turf that makes it hard for water, fertilizer, or beneficial microorganisms to get to the root systems of the grass. To penetrate this layer of thatch and restore health to your lawn landscapers either Aerate or Dethatch the lawn.

Dethatching a lawn is where a tool called a Dethatcher goes over your lawn and uses a rake like blade to pull up all of the old thatch. Then the landscaper rakes the thatch up and hauls it away.

Our lawn thatching includes running a Bluebird power thatcher over the top of all your lawn areas to remove the majority layer of thatch. Once this step is complete our landscape crew members will blow through the lawn areas collecting the bulk of the thatch. To complete this service we will perform a single lawn mowing.

Aerating and Overseeding

This service is a 2 step process that will rejuvenate and strengthen your lawn. First we will begin by running a billy goat core aeration machine over all turf areas to perforate the soil with small holes to enhance air, water, and nutrient penetration into the root zone. This will reduce solid compaction and promote healthier grass growth.

After we aerate, overseeding follows.  High quality grass seed is evenly spread across the entire lawn, paying special attention to any thin or bare areas in the lawn. These seeds will settle into the aerated holes, establish new growth and fill in any gaps in the lawn.

Recommended in the fall.
